Earth, Sky and Sea: A Printmakers World - Ludlow Assembly Rooms

I am delighted to have the opportunity to show my wood engravings and drypoint prints in an exciting solo exhibition at this newly refurbished arts venue in the heart of Ludlow. Check this page or follow @juliatimminsart on Instagram to hear details of printmaking demonstrations and workshops. If you would like to learn how I create my wood engravings or drypoint prints in a workshop please send an email to express your interest.

Julia Timmins is an artist and printmaker living and working in rural Shropshire. Profoundly influenced by the natural world, Julia creates keenly observed and finely detailed wood engravings and other prints using traditional tools and techniques. She invites the viewer to explore the wonders of our environment through her eyes

"Nature’s ephemeral, ever-evolving beauty has always fascinated me. The delicate balance of the ecosystem inspires me to capture its intricate details and organic patterns in my work.

Through my art I seek to celebrate the diversity and interconnectedness of life on earth and encourage others to deepen their connection with nature."

Centenary Exhibition (82nd Annual) Featuring The Seasons Project

Centenary Exhibition (82nd Annual) Featuring The Seasons Project

This is a special year for the Society of Wood Engravers as we celebrate our Centenary.

It was founded in 1920 by artists including Eric Gill, Gwen Raverat, Robert Gibbings, Philip Hagreen and Lucien Pissarro.  A break during the war years and then again in the 1970s meant that the annual exhibition ceased for a time, hence this being the 82nd show. Since the revival in 1984, the SWE has built a reputation for excellence, attracting exhibitors and collectors from around the world.

The Society exists to promote wood engraving, but also embraces all forms of relief printing, which makes this show a fascinating and affordable collection of images inspired by a wide range of subjects.

Seasons Project

2016 – 2018

This is the first time that these eighty engravings that form the Seasons Project have been shown together. The project took nearly three years to complete and includes work by SWE members from this country and around the world

The decision to produce four sets of twenty engravings by each of twenty artists was partly to mark our 2020 centenary, but also as a way of showing the work of as many of our members as possible at this special time.

Coast and Country: an Engraver's View

Coast and Country: an Engraver's View

  • Granary Grill, Weston Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Wood engraving is a centuries old technique; it is at once the simplest and one of the most exquisite forms of printmaking. Wood engravings tend to be closely worked and relatively small because of the finely pointed tools that are used. The finesse of wood engraving produces a particularly rich tonal range and therefore they are usually, but by no means exclusively, black and white.

Inspiration for the prints in this exhibition has been drawn from the coast and countryside and the varied flora and fauna that thrive in it.

This exhibition will be on display in the Granary Art Gallery, set in the grounds of Weston Park. The Granary Art Gallery is open daily 11am – 4pm and is free to enter
